CAT GIRLS: super cute!

have already discussed three major types of anime, and I can't think of another at the moment, so I am going to tell you about a genre of characters; cat girls! These feline friends are just like normal girls, except they have ears, a tail, and many feline behaviours! And house cats are just the beginning! Cat girls are sometimes also modelled after fierce wild cats, like tigers.

Cat girls appear in all the genres of anime. You may think that they are their own genre, but that's only a genre of character. They are not a genre of story. They can appear in all genres, like fantasy, adventure, and romance. This character type really is everywhere!

Cat girls can also be drawn in different styles, like kawaii, moe or chibi. This is the most adaptable character type ever! That's what it feels like, anyway.
This cat girl is one of my favorites. Her name is Ichigo and
she appears in the comic, 'Tokyo Mew Mew'. She is normally
a normal girl, but when the world needs help, she looks like
she does in the picture.

This cat girl was caught chasing a baby bird! All cat girls have hints of
feline behaviour.

This is a chibi cat girl. When they are chibis, they get even cuter!

As you can see by this cat girl's example, most cat girls
are just like us.

MOE: if you wanted to know more

If you read my entry on kawaii in general but wanted to know more about moe (moe-AYE), then this entry is for you! I'll go in to further detail about the moe style, and even show you some pictures! If you wanted to learn more, I'm here to help!

First I'll tell you why moe fits in to the kawaii genre. Kawaii means cute, and that's what it is; cute. But moe characters are cute for a different reason. These characters are mature girls with giant, shiny eyes. They have the biggest eyes in all of anime! When you look at the pictures, you will see how cute they are.

You may be wondering if moe is just another term for shojo. I can proudly tell you that it's not. Like I said earlier, moes have matured figures like an adult, while shojos look more like teenagers. Also, shojos have 'average sized eyes'. They are shiny, but smaller than moe eyes.

What did I tell you. Cute, right?

You may recognize this
girl from my previous entry.
She is kawaii!

CHIBIS: the mini me's of anime

Chibis are super-cute little people, animals, and even robots. When I say little, I mean it! Some times, a chibi's head is larger than its body! More often than not, though, a chibi's body structure is just like a small child's.

Just because chibis are super-small and super-cute like kawaii people, doesn't mean chibis are super-simplified, too. In fact, chibis are just like normal sized manga people that shrunk in the dryer. Everything is very detailed, and the eyes have shines; a feature that kawaii people don't have.

Even though chibis look super sweet and cute, some times, their personalities are the opposite. Some chibis are evil spies, cyborgs, mad scientists, and other generic bad-guys. It is very funny to see such a cute, sweet character wearing such a sour expression on their face!

Chibis have all the same character types as other genres of manga, just in a smaller package. If I know anything, these cute characters are addictive, and once you start drawing them, you can't stop!

Here is a chibi cat-girl.
As you can see, the
Cuteness is multiplied.

Here is a chibi with the proportions
of a small child.

This chibi has the second smallest
body type of all the chibis! Note
the giant, shiny eyes.

Here are some chibi animals. Animals in the
chibi style resemble kawaii animals.
However, this is the only chibi thing that this
likeness applies to.

KAWAII: a follow-up entry

You may be wondering why I didn't cover the Kawaii Crush dolls that are growing in popularity in my previous post.. The reason for that is that they are not authentic kawaii. They may be cute, but the eyes and mouths, as well as the body structure, are wrong. The accessories they come with, are however, authentic kawaii.

Look at the two pictures below. The one on the top is a kawaii crush doll. The one on the bottom is a kawaii drawing.

As you can see (and as I already mentioned), the eyes, mouths and body structure are not kawaii on kawaii crush dolls. If you do not see the difference between the mouths, the kawaii crush doll's mouth has lips. The drawing's mouth is just wide open, and even when the mouth is closed, kawaii mouths are just simple lines.

KAWAII; all shapes and sizes

Kawaii can mean two things, but both are ways to draw a character. The first are little, round squeezable characters who are so cute, you want to hug them 'til their eyes pop out. The second are mature teenage girls who have the biggest eyes in the entire anime genre! The second definition has its own name; moe (pronounced MOE-aye) Either way, kawaii is super cute and addictive. once you start drawing kawaii style, you can't stop! I bet the majority of the pages in my sketchbook are covered with kawaii, moe or likewise!

Kawaii can also be dark. Some kawaii characters are goths, dressing along the spectrum of nighttime colours. And yet, the cuteness always overpowers the darkness.

Kawaii faces can also be applied to intimate objects. Food is a real favorite. But a face is an instant cutifier on anything!
As I told you, cute overpowers goth!

Here is a transformation from
kawaii moe to normal kawaii.

Some kawaii food.

ANIME: an urban classic

Hello! As you might know, anime and manga are growing favorites among teens and tweens. It comes in many types, which come in many sizes, ranging from tiny chibis, to the kawaii moe (moe-ay) style. It can be super stylized, or super simplified. It can be whatever you want it to be, as long as it has big, sparkly eyes. So let's go! Let's draw anime!
